My Take On The Hockey Mom

Some of you out there might heavily disagree with me on the following topic, but since this is MY blog, I guess I’m gonna talk about it anyways...

Let’s face it, John McCain is no spring chicken. If he was elected president and god forbid, something happened to him, Sarah Palin would be the leader of our country! When I watched Sarah Palin's speech at the Republican National Convention, I kind of liked her. But then I came to know her beliefs and background. Now I believe that it would be a nightmare on a global level if she ever became president.

Here are just a few reasons I feel Sarah Palin is not prepared to be Vice-President / President:
* She has lived a highly sheltered life in Alaska and has hardly ever traveled outside of the country.

* In her interview with Charles Gibson she claimed to not know what the Bush Doctrine was.

*She used beauty pageants to get through college (Northern Idaho), receiving a non-descript journalism degree.

*She hasn’t shown much knowledge of the world, and her main credentials seem to be that she’s a life long gun owner who believes we should drill for oil here at home.

*Her time on city councils and as a small town mayor had controversies, and currently she’s involved in an ethics dispute involving abuse of power. She’s untested on the ‘big stage’ where every word will be scrutinized, and every flub magnified.

Here are some of her beliefs/actions I disagree with:
* She has been a lifelong member of the NRA and believes in people’s right to carry and conceal semi-automatic weapons.

* Palin opposes same-sex marriage and supported a non-binding referendum for an Alaskan constitutional amendment to deny state health benefits to same-sex couples.

* Palin has promoted oil and natural gas resource exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska and initiated a lawsuit over the federal listing of the polar bear and Cook Inlet beluga whale as an endangered species.

* Palin does not believe humans are responsible for global warming.

* She believes creationism should be taught in public schools.

* She believes in abstinence only education.

* She is a champion for big oil and her campaign slogan has become "Drill, baby, drill!"

* She promotes aerial hunting of wolves and bears even though Alaskans voted twice to ban the practice

* She opposes abortion in cases of rape and incest

* She opposed embryonic stem cell research

Please, don't get me wrong, I would love for a woman to be president or vice-president some day, but not if it goes against my beliefs and values. John McCain may be a War Hero, but that won’t necessarily make him a good president. For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. So needless to say, I will not be voting for the McCain/Palin ticket in this upcoming election.

Now I'll leave you with a few Palinisms...

"It's great to see another part of the country." --Sarah Palin, campaigning in Pennsylvania, Aug. 2008

"As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?" --Sarah Palin, interview with CNBC's "Kudlow & Co", July 2008

"They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska." – Sarah Palin, on her foreign policy insights into Russia, ABC News interview, Sept. 11, 2008. (Cindy McCain defended her foreign policy expertise by saying that Alaska is close to Russia. Huh? Knowledge through osmosis because another country is close by?)

"Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support." --Sarah Palin, declaring her support for abstinence-only education in a questionnaire during her 2006 gubernatorial race. Yeah, I guess an abstinence-only education worked really well for her daughter!

"When I hear a statement like that coming from a woman candidate with any kind of perceived whine about that excess criticism, or maybe a sharper microscope put on her, I think, 'Man, that doesn't do us any good, women in politics, or women in general, trying to progress this country." –Sarah Palin, on complaints from Hillary Clinton's campaign about sexist coverage, Spring 2008

"I have not, and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you." --Sarah Palin, after being asked if she had never met a foreign head of state, despite the fact that every vice president in the last 32 years had met a foreign head of state prior to taking office, ABC News interview, Sept. 11, 2008

What's the difference between Bush & Palin??? LIPSTICK!

I guess the only thing that I do like about Sarah Palin is that she is really easy to make fun of. Did you see the Saturday Night Live skit last weekend? Tina Fey nailed it!

Politics are passionate. I have concerns about both candidates, but I do know that what their personal beliefs are, they can't change the constitution in a snap of the finger. (unless I am an idiot and then I shouldn't vote.)

That being said, I am taking Evan to the McCain/Palin rally in Green Bay tomorrow to see history. If Obama comes through again, I will take him to that rally as well.

For what it's worth, our situation sucked just as much when Clinton was president as it does now. Nothing has changed for us either way. I still have to fight to get services for my son. So, maybe I am a little bit more interested in hearing from a mother with a special needs kid...*shrugs*

Jenny!
Agree... Disagree...
Doesn't matter to me one bit.

This is America and we are free to voice our opinion. More than that, our voice is not an empty voice, we have a vote!!!

and it hasn't always been that way...

I still don't know for sure who's getting my vote this time. One thing I do know for sure is that I'm crazy about YOU Jenny!

Politics schmolitics.
During the last presidential election, I couldn't bring myself to vote for either candidate. So I voted for Mickey Mouse. I hope I don't have to do that again.

Mickey Mouse! I hadn't thought of the write-in vote. Now I have to reconsider my voting stance.

:p

I can see you have been thinking hard about the election. I think that is very mature and smart!

I love it that you took the time to find out more, and then made a decision!

I wish we could do something about the apathy in America.

Thanks for the comments everyone. And thank you for respecting my position even if you don't agree with me. :)

Fantastic post!! We have a lot in common Jenny and share the same beliefs.

I'm happy you took the time to understand who Palin is unlike most of America who just blindly votes. More citizens need to be like you. Kudos!

how can I find you on facebook? I'd love to add you.

I sent you an email.

The real question is - do we really want "one of us" to lead the country?

I would rather have someone smarter then a soccer mom.

(whew). It scared me to click on your posting to read it - I thought you were going to write words of support. My "Oh, no, not Jenny, turned into Yeah Jenny!!!"

Great post!
